The Carrollton New Orleans is pleased to announce that James (Jim) Mathews has been named Executive Director of the senior living community owned and operated by Liberty Senior Living. Mathews assumed his role at the end of August.

A Career Built on Healthcare Leadership

Mathews brings more than 15 years of leadership experience in healthcare administration to The Carrollton. A graduate of Louisiana State University with a B.S. in Administration and an MBA, he is an active licensed nursing facility administrator for the State of Louisiana. Mathews has overseen new construction projects, directed behavioral hospital facilities, and managed communities offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing.

“Geriatrics has always been a passion of mine. I view this as my life mission rather than a job,” said Mathews. “I want to engage and protect our most vulnerable populations.” He cited novelist Pearl Buck’s words as a guiding inspiration: “Our society must make it right and possible for old people not to fear the young or be deserted by them, for the test of a civilization is the way that it cares for its helpless members.”

Drawn to The Carrollton’s History and Vision

Mathews’ connection to The Carrollton began months ago when he discovered the community online. “I was fascinated by the history of the property and its vision to turn a historic landmark into a beautiful community for seniors,” he said. “It’s magical that you can work in a place where you care for people while keeping history alive. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

A Community Steeped in Legacy

The icon was originally built in 1855 as the historic Carrollton Courthouse and later became a series of prestigious schools, including the Ben Franklin High School. The property was recently remodeled and renovated, becoming The Carrollton New Orleans senior living community in 2023 offering assisted living and memory care.

Building on a Strong Foundation

Since joining the community, Mathews has been impressed with the culture, noting the enthusiasm of the team members, the engagement of the residents, and the unique setting. “Every day is a great day for me,” he said. “The team has been tremendous, and I’ve been able to concentrate on the residents and their families. Everyone is so happy. I’m just building on a foundation that is already tremendous.”

Leadership with a Personal Touch

Describing his leadership style, Mathews said, “I engage with individuals in different ways. I’m paternal when necessary, a coach when necessary, and I like to work alongside people. My focus is on operational excellence, resident satisfaction, and innovative growth.”

A Vision for the Gulf Coast

His vision is for The Carrollton to be recognized as the premier luxury senior living community along the Gulf Coast. “There’s no reason why we can’t attract retirees who want to be part of such a unique cultural experience,” he said.

Mission, Family and Mentorship

Mathews said he is excited to be part of Liberty Senior Living. “I respect their mission, values, and operations in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee. And I am truly honored to serve as the representative for the organization in New Orleans, especially since The Carrollton is their only property in Louisiana to date.

Mathews, 39, lives in Mandeville with his wife and three children. In addition to his executive leadership, he is a licensed preceptor for the Louisiana Board of Examiners for Nursing Facility Administrators and has trained and mentored eight administrators. “I enjoy teaching, coaching, and motivating others. Sharing what makes me happy and seeing that inspire others is deeply rewarding,” he said.
